Sonar 2010

This years Sonar Festival in Barcelona took place across two indoor and two outdoor stages with over three days of events focused around “advanced music and multimedia art”.  Art, audiovisual concerts, and medialab presentations next to DJ sets, electonic music, film and more.  This years bill ranged from glitches, glides and ethereal vocals from London based Nedry, to experimental organic electronica that is Caribou, to bigger named acts such as The Chemical Brothers and Dizzee Rascal.  As part of the mayhem there were a range of Interactive multimedia installations: Marcel-lí Antúnez created a video wall of cartoonish craziness that placed viewers’ faces in the action.  ReacTable, by the Musical Technology Group from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, was a video-terminal table that responded to users moving around blocks and discs, showing connections like a flow chart as it triggered clicks and clatters.  And Golan Levin and Zachary Lieberman displayed a piece called Messa di Voce that made bubbles and drew lines using a microphone and tracking system.  Lets hope i can actually make it along next year.

Rube Goldberg music video

Discovered this music video, another visual masterpiece for Ok Go.  You’ll probably remember them best for their choreographed routine on treadmills.  And you probably want to check out the collection of videos on their website:

Kate Copeland

Kate Copeland

A couple of years ago I got a message from AIB student Kate Copeland asking if she could do some poster design work for Sixty Million Postcards. I had a quick glance and, to be totally honest, it slipped my mind to contact her back. A few weeks went by and I realised I needed posters for the Operator Please and Your Twenties gigs in the pub so I gave Kate a shout. What she came back with knocked me off my chair. The illustrations were some of the best I had ever seen, full of character and a hint of ‘darkness’ I always find so appealing, plus the poster designs were spot on. Two years on and Kate is now the resident designer and creative mind behind the Kill Em All club night which I run with the Filthy Dukes, meaning she regularly designs for fabric and other clubs all over the world. Have a look at the website she made for us here. She has also recently done work for Pure Groove (designing record sleeves for their label), Topman CTRL, Warchild, Stopmakingme, plus a lot more work for Postcards of course ... and she is still doing her degree. This young lady is going to go onto massive things. Check out her blog here.

SEXBEAT / Branchage viral series part.2 Tweak Bird

SEXBEAT / Branchage viral series part.2 Tweak Bird

Installment no.2 of the SEXBEAT viral series with Branchage film festival is a collaboration between Tweak Bird and directors Fred Grace & Gemma Atkinson. Tweak Bird make a whole bunch of noise for a 2 piece band of brothers (siblings that is, not over blown US drama). Their set at the SEXBEAT – Stag & Dagger stage felt more like a guest pass to their practice room than a festival performance, as they engrossed the crowd in a 30 minute, riff heavy jam, sounding much more Kyuss than No Age. Click to watch the video below…

Stuff We Like : The XX + Saam Farahmand

Stuff We Like : The XX + Saam Farahmand

Every now and again we’ll post something that isn’t strictly to do with Sixty Million Postcards, but that we just liked and decided to share with you. Here’s an image from artist Saam Farahmand’s installation interpretation of The XX album. We love the album and you can read a review of this exhibition on the link below. Shaam says of the project “Music videos are a 2D visual interpretation of a song… We are interested in creating spaces that exist as a 3D physical interpretation of a song or an album, and that is what we have created for the album xx”.

Remember to come and catch XX member / remixer and forward thinking DJ in his own right at Postcards on March 13th. It’ll be a good one.
